Summative Assessment
Summarizes what students have learned at the conclusion of an instructional segement
evaluative; reported as a score or grade
results typically "count" and appear on report cards and transcripts
used alone, insufficient tools for maximizing student learning
waiting until the end of a teaching period to find out how well students have learned-too late
Examples: Norm Reference Tests, End of Content Tests, Quizzes, Graded Work (in and out of class)
Formative Assessment
On Going, occurs concurrently with instruction
provides specific feedback to teachers and students for the purpose of guiding teaching to improving learning
formal and informal methods
resulots not fractored into summative evaluation and grades
Examples: checklists, ungraded quizzes, oral questioning, teacher observation, draft work, self/peer assessment
